CHAPTER 22

Over and over again they ran the obstacle course. Each completed run was rewarded with cold water and a few minutes of rest. The faster they cleared the course, the longer their break was before the next tun. It was a great incentive to push Gabriel and the other recruits to try harder as the sun climbed to its apex and descended toward the horizon.

Gabriel cleared the last tower and took a step forward. His legs buckled, sending him crashing to a knee with ragged breaths. Grunting, Gabriel forced himself to stand. He was dead on his feet but at least he was on his feet, running on wobbling legs to the finish line. The other recruits behind him were lagging further behind.

Not once did Townsend, or any of the instructors ease up on the day’s training. Even as they grew more exhausted with each run, they were only given ten minutes to clear the obstacle course. Jensen, Bridges, and the other instructors became more aggressive with their application of rubber slugs, especially with the recruits lagging at the back of the pack. The only breaks they really got was when the instructors had to go off for fresh mags.

“I hope this is the last one,” Sarah whined on his back.

Gabriel hoped so too. Sarah’s poor arms were scraped up and bruised from all of Gabriel’s failed landings and other close calls on the course that day. The longer this kept up, the worse it was going to get for Sarah as she was wholly reliant on Gabriel to make it through in one piece. Gabriel did have Sarah check to see if she could run after the fourth or fifth go at the course but the pain was still too much for her. She could walk again, but jogging alone caused her too much pain to do much else. So, Gabriel kept carrying her.

At least this mess was going to work wonders for his rankings.

“Come on, Gabriel. Just a little further,” Reylan said as he caught up to him.

To Gabriel’s surprise, Reylan was just as short of breath as he was. Even Titus was showing signs of wear and tear from the grueling day of training.

Gabriel nodded at Reylan with half-lidded eyes and his mouth hanging open. If this wasn’t the last run he wasn’t sure how he was supposed to make it through the day.

Reylan gave Gabriel a pat on the back then pulled ahead only to lose his footing. He slammed face first into the sand. Gabriel tried to catch him. Instead, Gabriel joined Reylan in the sand. Sarah rolled off his back with a cry of pain.

He looked up at the recruits who had finished before them. Every one of them was beat to hell from the day’s training but they still managed to stay on their feet. Gabriel’s wristcomp flashed an alarm, counting down from one minute. They had to make it across the finish line.

Gabriel shook Reylan by the shoulder. “Almost there, Reylan. Just a little more,” he wheezed and dragged his body across the sand toward Sarah.
